My dad didn’t really have words of wisdom. We joke that he would always say “whatever your pushing” if you asked him if he wanted something to eat, or “makes no difference” in German. (I can say it but can’t spell it!) He definitely led by example though. We knew beyond any shadow of a doubt that he loved us and family always came first. He impacted us with an incredible work ethic. He was also one to figure things out. If you asked him how he knew how to do something (he was incredibly handy), he would say “I read.” He was generous to a fault with both his time and his talent, always doing things for others. He was definitely a man of few words but many actions.

I enjoyed skimming through these words of wisdom from your dad. One thing my dad always said/says that has stuck with me: “If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right.”

In other words, if you’re going to be stuck working a sucky job, you might as well make the most of it, do it to the best of your ability, and practice excellence.

The downside of this advice is that I sometimes spend way too much time on little things that don’t matter! When that happens in future, I’ll remind myself of #1 on your list :-)

Two of them majored in engineering as well though one later became an MD. The youngest was immune to my brain washing and loves her career in university education. I loved your dad’s advice, much sager than mine. My dad stressed paying cash for everything except a house and paying it off early. Never have a car payment or carry a credit card balance. And I never did and I was able to retire early with money and no debt. He also stressed tithing as a man of faith. That certainly helped me have a balanced attitude about money.
