Great article! I’m a consultant & nascent writer/researcher/editor, struggling to get back on my feet after lengthy disability. I’d never considered Fiverr because I thought it was too cheap. I looked at offerings for what I do, and gigs are $150+/hr up with sustainable models… and I have the core of similar or better models.

I hadn’t considered voiceover work – intriguing! If I can master voice editing, it’d be a fun way to use my online teaching & presentation skills.

One side gig to add is online university teaching. Adjunct instructors are paid anywhere from $2,200-$10,000 per class; median about $3-4,000. It can be hard to get into a school but once you’re in, you can (usually) increase your teaching load if you get good student ratings. Community colleges pay much less but are easier to get into; sometimes they’ll accept a bachelor’s degree. It’s a long play – most semesters are 12 weeks; some are 5 or 8.

If you design your classes well, you can leverage 1-2 courses into 6-8 offerings a year, tweak a class into a graduate offering (higher pay) and possibly corporate training (MUCH higher pay, less work). Course design is a big upfront time investment. Training is available, but I had one school require an 8 week training course with no teaching guarantee. At my peak, I made $38,000/yr teaching 7 courses for 3 schools, and it was a full-time job. That said, I have my courses ready to go if I returned; with a few tweaks I could be up & ready in 2 weeks.

CONS:
* Requires comfort with course management systems (e.g. Blackboard) and sometimes publisher supplemental sites.
* Flex hours but 6-7 days/week. Responses expected within 24 hrs, grades within 3-4 days.
* Some schools monitor annoying online metrics (e.g. post frequency, quantity, and length)
